Federal Ministers Commit to Empowering Pakistan’s Rice Export Sector

ISLAMABAD, December 19, 2024: In a significant move to bolster Pakistan’s rice export industry, Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain engaged with the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) to address challenges and unlock growth opportunities in the sector.

During the meeting, both ministers emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a robust export mechanism and resolving hurdles faced by rice exporters.

Highlights of the Meeting:

  1. Market Leadership & Growth Potential:
    • Minister Jam Kamal Khan commended the resilience of Pakistani rice exporters who continue to lead global markets despite competitive pressures from India.
    • Emerging markets like Bangladesh were highlighted as key opportunities for expansion.
  2. Compliance & Operational Challenges:
    • Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain pledged immediate action to resolve legislative and pesticide compliance challenges, a pressing concern for exporters in international markets.
    • The Department of Plant Protection (DPP) will be strengthened, with plans to increase the number of inspectors across ports, especially in Punjab.
  3. Outstanding Export Orders & Legislation:
    • The government assured that all pending export orders will be fulfilled by January 15. Interim measures will be implemented while long-term solutions are developed.
  4. Achievements of Pakistani Rice Exporters:
    • REAP Chairman highlighted the industry’s global success, particularly in the EU and UK markets, where Pakistani rice outperformed competitors due to its lower pesticide residues.
  5. Collaboration & Support:
    • Exporters requested expedited container release procedures and more robust support systems to streamline operations.
