Govt. should take steps to stop sugar delivery to Afghanistan

Fears of a potential sugar crisis, wholesale grocers ask to stop sending from borders.

Karachi, January 20, 2020: Karachi Wholesalers Association (KWGA), ask to stop delivery from borders and expressing concern over fears of a potential sugar crisis.

In a statement Anis Majeed, patron in chief, Malik Zulfiqar Ali, chairman KWGA, suggested that sugar delivery should not be made at all outside the country and the government should take effective measures to prevent the delivery of sugar to Afghanistan, including the border, while preventing speculation could improve the situation.

KWGA leaders, informing the government of the possible causes of the sugar crisis, said that this year, sugar production will be less than 1.5 million tons less than last year and sugar production in the country is expected to be between 50 and 55 million tons, while consumption is also between 50 and 55 million tones.

Thus, if sugar delivery at all outside the country and supply of sugar to Afghanistan will be not stopped then a serious crisis of sugar may be created. This is likely to increase the price of sugar in the wholesale and retail markets.

KWGA leaders said that measures should be taken to prevent potential sugar crisis, otherwise sugar crisis like flour can arise, so the government should adopt effective strategies before the sugarcane crop is harvested.

The KWGA will cooperate with the government in order to make the availability of sugar at reasonable prices to the masses possible.
