Karachi, June 19, 2022: Sindh Mass Transit Authority under the ‘Peoples’ Bus Service’ project is to buy 250 buses that will operate on 7 different routes in Karachi and one route of Larkana while consultations are underway with China and Turkey for addition of more fleets.
For the procurement of 250 buses, the government of Sindh has spent Rs 6.4 billion in 2021-22 and has allocated Rs 4.0 billion in the budget 2022-23.
In this regard, the provincial government has enhanced grant for “Sindh Mass Transit Authority” by 50% from Rs 200 million to Rs 300 million for 2022-23.
This is also being undertaken under the ‘Sindh Peoples Intra-district Bus Project’ in collaboration with National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
Besides, the construction work on Orange Line BRT-4.77 Km long (funded under ADP Scheme) in Karachi is near completion in the current financial year.
It is to be noted that the Green Line BRT–17.80 km (funded by Federal Government) has been operationalized with effect from December 25, 2021.
Moreover, Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) with length of 21.5 Km for Rs 78.384 billion and another project “Karachi Urban Mobility Project” Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) with length of 22 km for Rs 56.185 billion are being executed.
In addition to this, BRT Blue Line project has also been approved by PDWP and is under process of tendering under PPP mode.
Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah in his budget speech stated that the government of Sindh aims to develop mass transit system in major cities, especially in Karachi.
The Transport and Mass Transit Department is also establishing modern terminals at Karachi, Thatta, Badin and Miro Khan in the first phase. The construction of bus terminals at Thatta road and Miro Khan is under process through works and services department, government of Sindh. The revenue department has allotted 100 acres land in scheme 33 at Karachi for the construction of terminal.
