Mystery of Finance Minister: Who is Pakistan’s finance minister?

Islamabad, April 19, 2019: The federal government is yet to confirm the resignation of federal finance Minister Asad Umer as the fresh list of ministers, ministers of state, advisers and special assistants issued by Cabinet Division is still named of Asad Umer as minister finance.

While the notification of his substitute Abdul Hafeez Sheikh is also yet awaited.

The fresh list was issued by the Cabinet Division on Thursday following a major reshuffle in the federal cabinet.

The list reflecting a number of changes in the federal ministerial posts, however, Federal Finance Minister, who announced to quit the cabinet in a press conference, is still named on the list retaining Minister Finance position.

On Thursday morning Asad Umar on social media announced that he will no longer be a part of the Imran Khan’s cabinet and he also rejected Prime Minister offered of energy minister.

Although, there were reports that the federal government has appointed former Abdul Hafeez Sheikh as an advisor to the prime minister on finance, however, still his appointment has not been notified by cabinet division.

Sources said that Abdul Hafeez Sheikh has some reservations and want to work on his term and conditions.

Although, there were some five to six names for minister finance including former governor State Bank of Pakistan Dr Ishrat Hussain, Dr Shamshad Aktar, Salman Shah, Umer Ayub.

Asad Umer was appointed Finance minister in August 2018 and was the candidate of this post since 2013 general elections, when PML-N defeat all parties and Mian Nawaz Sharif’s close relative Ishaq Dar was appointed Finance Minister.

Despite unconditional support and round the clock efforts by the Asad Umar for the betterment of Pakistan’s economy, most of PTI leaders were disappointed with the performance of Asad Umer, that resulted in his removal from the minister finance.

Sources said that After Ghulam Sarwar Khan has also declined to take charge of aviation minister as part of Thursday’s cabinet reshuffle.

Similarly, Amir Mehmood Kayani who was deprived of his portfolio still retains the position of health minister on the list issued by the Cabinet Division.

According to the notification of the cabinet division, the size of federal cabinet has surged to 47 members including some 25 federal ministers, 5 ministers of state, 4 advisers to prime ministers and some 13 special assistants to PM.

Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has been made Federal Minister for Science and Technology, previously he was serving as information minister. Ghulam Sarwar has been appointed as federal minister for Aviation, Ijaz Ahmed Shah as Federal Minister for Interior, Shehryar Afridi Minister of State for SAFRON and Mohammad Mian Soomro Federal Minister for Privatization with an additional portfolio of Aviation Division.
