Pakistan releases Indian Pilot

Lahore, March 1, 2019: Pakistan on Friday released arrested Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman as a gesture of regional peace.

The Indian pilot was arrested on Wednesday, when his jet was shot down by Pakistan Air Force on boarder violation.

Prime Minister Imran Khan at a joint session of Parliament on Thursday officially announced the release of Indian pilot.

Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan was handed back to Indian officials at the Wagah border on Friday afternoon. Pakistan has taken this step as a peace gesture and to de-escalate tension between Pakistan and India.

Thousands of people and media persons were gathered on the Indian side early Friday to welcome the pilot home. The Indian High Commission completed travel documents for the pilot from Pakistan to India.

After the Pulwama (Kashmir) attack on February 14, within 30 minutes India blamed Pakistan for the attack and later Indian Air Force jets violated the boarder and entered into Pakistan’s airspace that forced the Pakistan to respond and two jet were shot down Pakistan.

It may be mentioned here that the Wagah boarder is famed for a daily parade ceremony by Indian and Pakistani soldiers at sunset.
