Power Generation drops 6.4% YoY in Sep’24

FY

Islamabad, October 23, 2024: Power generation in Pakistan saw a year-on-year decline of 6.4% in September 2024, with total output falling to 12,487 GWh (17,343 MW) compared to 13,339 GWh (18,527 MW) during the same period last year (SPLY). On a month-on-month basis, the country also experienced a 5.3% decrease in power generation, reflecting ongoing challenges in the energy sector.

For the first quarter of FY25, power generation decreased by 8.1% year-on-year, with output dropping to 40,546 GWh (18,363 MW), down from 44,137 GWh (19,990 MW) in the corresponding quarter last year. This consistent decline suggests potential stress on the power supply system.

In September 2024, the actual power generation was 10% lower than the reference generation, which is expected to lead to higher capacity charges for consumers. These charges are projected to reach PKR 5.6/Kwh for December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025, adding financial pressure on households and businesses.

The decline in power generation could lead to increased costs and further emphasize the need for efficiency improvements and investment in the energy sector to ensure a stable and affordable electricity supply.
