Karachi Development Projects Advance Across All Seven Districts, Says Mayor’s Spokesperson
KMC is undertaking major infrastructure schemes through its own resources, while tenders have been completed for around 140 additional roads at an estimated cost of Rs13 billion.
Development work is continuing across all seven districts of Karachi, with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) advancing projects related to roads, waste management, wastewater treatment and public facilities, Mayor Karachi’s spokesperson and KMC Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi has said.
Waqasi said several major initiatives were underway to improve the city’s infrastructure and municipal services. These include a modern mechanical waste transportation system, industrial wastewater treatment facilities, road construction and rehabilitation, and improvements to essential civic infrastructure.
He said preparations were underway to introduce a modern mechanical waste transportation system in Karachi for the first time. The initiative is expected to modernise sanitation operations and improve the movement of waste across the city.
According to Waqasi, KMC is also carrying out major development schemes using its own financial resources. These include the Natha Khan Chakora Nullah Expressway, a connecting road between Gulistan-e-Jauhar and University Road, Jahangir Road, Gulbai to Sher Shah Road and Tori Bangash Road.
The spokesperson added that the tendering process had been completed for the construction and rehabilitation of approximately 140 additional roads. The projects carry an estimated cost of Rs13 billion.
Work has also started on replacing streetlights along 41 major roads to improve public infrastructure and road visibility.
In the water and sanitation sector, Waqasi highlighted the establishment of Pakistan’s first industrial water park, describing it as an important development in industrial wastewater treatment. He said work was also progressing on an additional treatment facility with a capacity of 65 million gallons per day.
He added that the completion of the Haroonabad and Gutter Baghicha projects is expected to help achieve a combined wastewater treatment capacity of 100 million gallons per day.
Other infrastructure initiatives include a new flyover at Garden Nishter Road and the completion of a 10-million-gallon-per-day elevated water supply line under the K-III project. The water supply scheme aims to improve provision to Lyari.
Waqasi also referred to plans for restoring Spencer Eye Hospital, establishing a modern sports complex in Baldia Town and rehabilitating historic markets across Karachi. These projects are intended to improve public facilities and the urban environment.
He said KMC was publishing project details on its official website to promote transparency and keep citizens informed about development activities.
The spokesperson also stressed the need to prevent repeated excavation of newly constructed roads, remove encroachments and improve coordination among government departments.
Waqasi said Karachi’s development could not be handled by one institution alone. He called on all local government bodies, town administrations and relevant departments to share responsibility and coordinate their efforts.
He added that cooperation among municipal institutions was essential to improve roads, sanitation, water supply, transportation and other basic civic services across the city.
