Nawaz Sharif’s sentence in Al-Azizia ‘suspended’ by Punjab govt

Lahore, October 24, 2023: The Caretaker Punjab Cabinet has suspended the sentence of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia reference.

The sources close to the development revealed that under Section 401 of the Criminal Procedural Code, the caretaker government has the authority to suspend the punishment of the criminal.

Regarding this matter, the former Attorney General has emphasized that the law is unambiguous. He points out that the Islamabad High Court has already made a decision, which clearly states that cases involving the suspension of sentences fall within the jurisdiction of the provincial government.

Additionally, he mentions that the decision of the Abad High Court has been put into effect, allowing the caretaker government to also have the authority to suspend sentences.

It should be noted that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif surrendered before the court today in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia reference, the court had granted him protective bail till October 24 today.

It should be remembered that the Islamabad High Court had stopped Nawaz Sharif from being arrested at the airport on his return to the country in the Al-Azizia and Avonfield reference and had given Nawaz Sharif an opportunity to surrender in court.

It is worth mentioning here that the former PM Nawaz Sharif has been convicted in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia reference, the accountability court sentenced Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison and 8,000,000 pounds in the Avenfield reference and to 7 years in the Al-Azizia reference.
