Sugar price soars to Rs143/kg in Pakistan

Islamabad, December 19, 2023 : Sugar prices surged to Rs143 per kg in retail markets throughout Pakistan, as per an official document.

Official data indicates that sugar was priced at Rs95.29 per kg in December of last year. The average price of the commodity increased by Rs48 per kg during the same period.

Additional details reveal that sugar is being retailed at Rs174 per kg in Quetta, Rs150 per kg in both Peshawar and Islamabad. In Rawalpindi and Lahore, the commodity is sold at Rs150 per kg, while in Sargodha, Multan, and Gujranwala, the rate is Rs145 per kg.

On November 29, it was revealed that the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) acquired 40,000 metric tonnes of sugar at Rs124.90/kg. Insiders familiar with the matter disclosed that the procurement was in accordance with the tender issued the previous month.

The sources stated that the sugar was obtained at a rate Rs10.37/kg lower than the corporation’s previous tender. After factoring in expenses, the total cost of sugar to them would be Rs138.
