Karachi, January 01, 2024 : Karachi Welcomes 2024 with Aerial Firing, Resulting in 11 Injuries Across the City. Despite warnings from Karachi police, New Year revelers engaged in aerial firing, leading to a seven-year-old child’s injury in Bahadurabad. Additional incidents occurred at Five Star Chowrangi (three injuries), Seaview (two injuries), and single injuries reported in Liaquat Abad and North Nazimabad.

Police had cautioned celebrants about potential terrorism charges related to such activities during New Year celebrations.

Previously, Karachi Police Chief Khadim Hussain Rind announced that cases against individuals engaging in aerial firing on New Year’s Eve would include charges of attempted murder and terrorism.

The police official emphasized the significance of taking decisive actions against hooliganism and aerial firing, ensuring those responsible face legal consequences. Rind also underscored the need for search operations, market and mosque announcements to discourage aerial firing, and the promotion of positive police actions through social media to mitigate any adverse impact.

Additionally, the police chief instructed his subordinates, with a special focus on traffic police chief DIG Iqbal Dara, to apprehend individuals engaged in drinking and driving. Simultaneously, a comprehensive prohibition on the possession or display of arms, aerial firing, and the use of fireworks has been enforced throughout Karachi for a duration of two days.

Citywide Ban on Carrying Weapons and Aerial Firing During New Year Celebrations

In response to New Year’s celebrations, a ban on carrying and displaying weapons across the city has been mandated. Additionally, directives have been issued to arrest individuals engaged in aerial firing.

Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Rajput stated that the ban, implemented under Section 144 of the criminal procedure code (CrPC), aims to safeguard the city’s residents during the New Year’s festivities. The ban is effective from December 31 to January 1, 2024, as per the notification and powers delegated by the provincial home department.
