The Ministry of Commerce and the World Trade Organization (WTO) jointly organized a four-day ‘National Workshop on General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS)’ in collaboration with the Pakistan Regional Economic Integration Activity (PREIA), a USAID-funded project.
The workshop’s objective was to equip participants with an enhanced understanding of the services trade negotiations to enable them in unlocking the potential of services sector by improving their export competitiveness.
Over Seventeen (17) Federal and Provincial Ministries/Departments participated in this Workshop. Mr. Markus Jelitto, Senior Counsellor with the Trade in Services and Investment Division at the WTO, and Mr. Usman Ali Khilji, Head of Asia and Pacific Desk, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation (ITTC) of the WTO, apprised the participants about various aspects of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS).
The Federal Minister for Commerce Minister attended the closing ceremony of the Workshop.
Addressing the participants, he stressed the need for continuous capacity building of government officers to meet the changing global trade dynamics.
He highlighted the role of services sector and its linkage with domestic commerce, especially the role of provincial governments.
Senior officers from the Ministry of Commerce also attended the event.
The Workshop ended with the presentation of shields and certificates to the resource persons and participants by the Commerce Minister.
