Karachi, July 11, 2024: A citizen has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against the city government of Karachi for tree cutting.
The high court has issued notices to Mayor Karachi and others involved in the case, requiring them to submit replies by the next hearing.
The bench postponed further proceedings until August 21.
The petitioner has named the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), D.G. Parks, and other respondents in the case.
The petitioner argued in court that the Director General of Parks ordered the cutting of trees under the instructions of the city’s mayor, specifically around Jail Chowrangi (roundabout).
The petition stated that this action violates the court’s prohibition order on tree cutting.
Amid extreme weather events, the cutting of trees is viewed as exacerbating climate issues for the city, including prolonged heatwaves and rising temperatures.
