Pakistan’s population expected to double by 2050: report

Islamabad, July 18, 2024: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) report indicates that the country’s population is projected to double by 2050 if the current growth rate persists.

The report from the 7th Population Census highlights that Pakistan has the highest population growth rate in the region.

According to the findings, there are 21.26 million Afghans, Bangladeshis, and other foreigners residing in Pakistan, along with 8.7 million individuals from Hindu, Christian, and other religious backgrounds.

Additionally, the report notes that 2.53 million children aged 5-16 are out of school, and 3.10% of the population consists of people with disabilities. The literacy rate stands at 61%, with male literacy at 68% and female at 53%.

Demographically, 79% of the population is under 40 years old, with 40.56% under 15 years and 26% aged between 15-29.

Marital status data reveals that 29.75% are unmarried, 65.97% are married, 3.78% are widowed, 0.35% are divorced, and 0.15% are separated.

Earlier, a significant UN report projected Pakistan’s current population of over 245 million to continue growing, potentially peaking in the second half of the century or later.

According to the UN’s World Population Prospects 2024, Pakistan is expected to reach a peak population of 404.68 million in 2092, surpassing Indonesia in 2048 when it reaches 331.29 million people.
