Sindh government to expand seed production in sindh seed corporation

KARACHI: October 9 2024, The Sindh government has decided to extend the production of seeds to include fruit, oilseeds, and vegetables in the Sindh Seed Corporation. This was discussed in a review meeting chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar, regarding the introduction of new reforms in the corporation.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture Secretary Rafiq Ahmed Buriro, Managing Director of the Seed Corporation Mushtaq Soomro, Directors General Nadeem Shah, Shahab Abro, Mazhar Kerio, and other officials. During the meeting, MD Mushtaq Ahmed Soomro presented a detailed plan outlining the reforms aimed at revitalizing the Sindh Seed Corporation.

Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Mahar mentioned that a comprehensive reform plan has been devised and will soon be presented to the Sindh Cabinet. He also directed the MD to make 1,500 acres of uncultivated agricultural land under the Seed Corporation cultivable within two years.

The Minister emphasized that affordable seeds should be provided to farmers, and other seed processing plants should also be activated. He stated that by supplying farmers with high-quality seeds, they can achieve higher yields. During the briefing, the MD informed the provincial minister that 7 out of 12 inactive farms and seed processing plants had already been reactivated within 20 days.

He added that within two years, the corporation aims to generate an income of 500 million and will spend 200 million on development. Additionally, seed processing plants in Sakrand and Ghotki have been fully operationalized. The MD further disclosed that the Sindh Seed Corporation has established two mobile units that will educate farmers in rural areas. Moreover, the corporation has developed a new app where all records will be uploaded to ensure transparency and accessibility.
