KARACHI, December 18, 2024: In a groundbreaking move, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has partnered with the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) to establish the DOW-APPNA Center for Emerging Technologies (DACET). This center will play a pivotal role in advancing education in artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, specifically tailored for medical and allied health sciences students.
The inaugural plaque for DACET was unveiled by DUHS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, President of APPNA, Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, and Chairman of APPNA Winter Meeting, Dr. Saeed Sabir.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, President of APPNA, expressed his pride in this partnership. He stated, “We are thrilled to collaborate with DUHS to launch DACET, the first initiative of its kind in a public-sector medical university in Pakistan. This center will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate AI and other emerging technologies into their medical practice, revolutionizing patient care nationwide.” He also announced that APPNA would provide $200,000 in funding for the center, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and expert faculty.
Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, Vice Chancellor of DUHS, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, saying, “This partnership exemplifies our shared vision for the future of healthcare education. DACET will be a landmark in Pakistan’s medical sector, enabling students to acquire critical skills in AI and emerging technologies, transforming the healthcare landscape.”
The DOW-APPNA Center for Emerging Technologies will not only enhance medical education but also set a benchmark for other public-sector institutions, ensuring Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global healthcare and technology sectors.
In a related announcement at the Karachi Press Club, Dr. Asif Mohiuddin, alongside other prominent figures, revealed that APPNA has also inaugurated the Dow-APPNA Institute of Emerging Technologies at DUHS. They also discussed plans for a Genomic Lab at Jinnah Sindh Medical University, which is in the process of importing machines and will begin operations soon. Furthermore, arrangements are being made to provide US scholarships to physicians from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro, to further enhance the education and skills of healthcare professionals.
