Rohit Sharma, the triumphant captain who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, will continue to lead Team India in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 and the 2023-2025 World Test Championship (WTC).
“I am confident that under Rohit’s captaincy, we will triumph in the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy,” stated Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Shah’s comments follow India’s breakthrough win in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they ended an 11-year ICC trophy drought by defeating South Africa in the final under Rohit’s leadership.
Rohit Sharma took over as India’s captain in 2021 after Virat Kohli stepped down. Since then, India has reached the finals of the WTC 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023, narrowly missing out to Australia on both occasions.
In a video message shared by the BCCI, Shah dedicated India’s World Cup victory to former head coach Rahul Dravid, who led the team in his final match, and to Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who retired from T20Is.
“Congratulations to Team India for this historic win. This was our third final in the past year. We lost in the World Test Championship final in June 2023 and won hearts in November 2023, but couldn’t clinch the cup,” said the BCCI official.
“In Rajkot, I had predicted that in June 2024, we would win hearts, win the cup, and raise India’s flag, and our captain fulfilled that promise. The final five overs played a crucial role in this victory.
“I extend my gratitude to Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya for their contributions. Following this triumph, our focus shifts to the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I am confident that under Rohit’s leadership, we will emerge victorious in both these tournaments,” Shah concluded.
