Karachi has been flooded in the past, but we will not let it happen again, said Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Sunday.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Wahab announced that the city authorities are bringing additional water from Hub Dam for the first time in 20 years.
Criticizing his predecessor Waseem Akhtar, Wahab stated that Akhtar had halted the operation of buses in the city. “We are introducing a plan to revive these buses,” he added.
The Mayor stated that New M.A. Jinnah Road, originally a six-lane track, currently has only two operational lanes, with the remaining space occupied by make-shift shops, cart vendors, and vehicles.
“We will launch an operation to remove these encroachments after Ashura. We will complete this work unless the anti-Karachi card is played against it,” he added.
It is worth mentioning that the city has been plagued by encroachments on public spaces for many years. Despite numerous orders from the Supreme Court and the Sindh High Court directing authorities to remove these encroachments, footpaths, pavements, walkways, green belts, parks, grounds, service lanes, streets, and roads remain occupied not only by common people and traders but also by law enforcement agencies, government, and private organizations.
