Internet services to remain suspended during Muharram

Quetta, July 14, 2024: The Balochistan government has decided to suspend mobile and internet services in several cities on the 7th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram.

According to a spokesperson from the Balochistan home ministry, mobile and internet services will be suspended in Quetta, Kachhi, Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, and Usta Muhammad on the 7th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram.

To ensure security on Youm-e-Ashurah, the government has deployed over 18,000 personnel in Quetta. Additionally, two helicopters will conduct aerial surveillance of processions during these days.

Section 144 has been imposed in seven districts until the 10th of Muharram, prohibiting pillion riding and implementing other restrictions to uphold law and order.

Earlier, the federal government approved the deployment of armed forces nationwide to maintain security during the month of Muharram.

This decision follows requests from authorities in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir for military deployment to ensure law and order.

Under Article 245 of the Constitution, the Centre authorized the “deployment of army troops/assets and civil armed forces troops/assets” to uphold peace.

Ashura, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala, will be observed in Pakistan on July 17 (Wednesday).

In Sindh, the provincial government has imposed a ban on pillion riding for the 10 days of Muharram.
