Karachi, August 07, 2024: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aliya Hamza was released from Gujranwala Prison on Wednesday.

She had been incarcerated in connection with the May 9 incident and was granted bail by a Gujranwala sessions court on July 31.

Her release followed the submission of surety bonds worth Rs 50,000 and a release order from the trial court.

After her release, Aliya Hamza returned to her residence.

On June 6, she was re-arrested in a separate case related to the May 9 violence, despite having been granted bail in a similar case by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).

The Gujranwala police had been seeking Aliya Hamza in connection with the violence that erupted across Pakistan following the arrest of former Prime Minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday.

The ensuing protests, sparked by Khan’s arrest, led to violent clashes in both remote and major cities. The unrest prompted the armed forces to be deployed in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad to maintain law and order.

During the protests, army installations and the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore were attacked by PTI workers.

Reports also indicated that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Ali Nasir Rizvi sustained severe injuries while managing the situation.
