BMP to Contest FPCCI Elections, Alleges UBG Violated Agreement
Mian Anjum Nisar says the agreement calls for the next FPCCI president to be from Sindh, while BMP has yet to finalise its candidate.
The Businessmen Panel (BMP) has announced that it will contest the upcoming elections of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), accusing the United Business Group (UBG) of violating a written agreement between the two groups.
BMP Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar made the announcement at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club. BMP Secretary General Haji Ghulam Ali and Patron-in-Chief Sultan Chawla also attended the event, along with other business leaders.
Nisar said the agreement called for the next FPCCI president to be from Sindh. He stressed that the province’s representation in the country’s leading business federation should not be overlooked.
BMP leaders alleged that Sindh had faced unequal treatment in matters involving provincial representation. They argued that the FPCCI should ensure balanced representation and equal participation for business communities across all provinces.
The panel called for the written agreement to be honoured and urged the federation to operate transparently, follow democratic traditions and resolve business community concerns through consultation and fair procedures.
BMP leaders also said the FPCCI should focus on addressing the challenges facing businesses, including economic uncertainty, inflation and the heavy tax burden, rather than becoming a platform for political confrontation.
When asked about its presidential candidate, BMP leaders said the panel had not yet finalised a candidate to contest against UBG nominee SM Tanveer, who is from Punjab.
The panel maintained that it would participate in the election and continue to press for what it described as Sindh’s right to representation under the agreement.
BMP leaders also expressed support for Field Marshal Hafiz Asim Munir’s economic vision and reiterated their commitment to protecting business community interests, provincial representation and transparency in the FPCCI election process.
The dispute sets the stage for a contest over leadership and provincial representation ahead of the upcoming FPCCI elections. The allegations regarding the agreement reflect BMP’s position; the supplied report does not include a response from UBG.
