6.9 magnitude quake hits Indonesia’s Banda Sea region

6.9 magnitude quake

Indonesia, November 08, 2023 : The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a 6.9 magnitude earthquake occurring in the Banda Sea region of Indonesia on Wednesday.

According to the EMSC, the earthquake was located approximately 370 km (229.9 miles) southeast of Ambon, Indonesia, and had an estimated depth of 146 km.

In January of this year, Indonesia experienced a 7.6 magnitude earthquake near the Tanimbar islands. This event led to residents in the vicinity evacuating their homes in panic. However, it’s worth noting that a tsunami warning was issued but subsequently lifted after three hours, and reports indicated only minor damage.

The Tanimbar islands constitute a cluster of approximately 30 islands situated in Indonesia’s Maluku province. Following the strong earthquake, there were at least four reported aftershocks. Additionally, the tremors were felt in certain regions of northern Australia.

Indonesia is located within the Ring of Fire, a vast tectonic belt that encircles the Pacific Ocean, spanning roughly 40,000 kilometers in length and up to about 500 kilometers in width. This region is home to a significant number of volcanoes, ranging between 750 and 915, which account for approximately two-thirds of the global total. Furthermore, the Ring of Fire is responsible for 90% of the world’s seismic activity, including 81% of the most significant earthquakes.
