Lahore, November 23, 2023 : A Lahore anti-terrorism court has remanded Afnan Shafqat, the underage driver accused of causing the death of six members of a family while driving without a license, to police custody for five days on physical remand.
The Defense police presented the accused before the court, requesting his physical remand for additional investigation. In the course of the hearing, the case’s investigation officer (IO) informed the court that the suspect’s age exceeded 17, emphasizing the need for a medical test to ascertain his precise age.
The investigation officer (IO) sought the court’s approval for the physical remand of the teenage driver, a request that was subsequently granted. Nevertheless, the attorney representing the suspect objected to the physical remand.
It is important to note that a tragic car accident occurred in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 area, resulting in the unfortunate demise of six members of the same family. The family, having visited relatives in Shadab Colony on Ferozpur Road, was returning home in two cars. At a roundabout, their vehicle collided with another car, leading to the tragic incident.
The distressing event caused profound emotional trauma for the head of the family as he witnessed his wife Rukhsana Bibi (45), son Husnain (25), daughter-in-law Ayesha (23), son-in-law Sajjad (30), four-month-old grandson Huzaifa, and granddaughter Anaya (4) in a tragic pool of blood.
The car driver, Afnan Shafqat, subdued by local residents at the scene, seemed to be a teenager. The police promptly arrested and charged him in the aftermath of the incident.
In his statement of admission, Afnan confessed to driving at a speed exceeding 100 km/h. In a video statement, he acknowledged driving for a year despite his parents’ attempts to prohibit him.
