Social media to remain suspended in Punjab during Muharram?

Islamabad, July 05, 2024 : The Punjab government’s request to suspend social media during Muharram has been denied.

According to sources, provinces had proposed banning six apps from 6th to 11th Muharram.

Sources revealed that the federal government responded to the Punjab government’s request, stating that Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp, and other social media apps will not be banned.

The federal government has pledged to ensure foolproof security during Muharram, with the Ministry of Interior directing that security measures be intensified and made more effective.

The Ministry of Interior has also ordered that mobile signals be blocked in areas where processions and majalis will take place.

Earlier, the Punjab Home Ministry issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for majalis during Muharram.

According to the directions, the installation of walk-through gates has been declared mandatory at sensitive locations during Muharram.

The security for majalis will consist of three layers to prevent any untoward incidents. The entry and exit routes for the majalis will be determined in advance, and attendees will be screened with metal detectors.

The SOPs specify that car parking facilities must be established at least 200 meters away from the venue of the majlis.

The use of loudspeakers will be restricted to the majalis, and adherence to scheduled times is advised.

It is pertinent to mention that a meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, presided over by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir, has been convened for July 6 to observe the moon of Muharram al-Haram, after which the new Islamic year will be announced.
