Toshakhana case: Imran Khan, Bushra bibi sent on physical remand

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)

Rawalpindi, July 14, 2024: Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi have been placed on a six-day physical remand in a new Toshakhana case.

Accountability court judge Muhammad Ali Warraich announced the verdict on pleas seeking their remand.

The court directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to conduct investigations into the detained PTI founder and his wife.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification approving a jail trial for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in a new Toshakhana case.

The notification, issued with the approval of the federal government, cites security concerns under Section 16-B of the NAB Ordinance 1999 for conducting the trial in jail.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were arrested yesterday in a fresh National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reference related to Toshakhana, shortly after their acquittal in the Iddat case.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were arrested by a NAB team led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon from Adiala Jail, according to sources familiar with the matter. The NAB team also obtained initial statements from the PTI founder and his wife.

Later, Bushra Bibi was re-arrested shortly after her release from Adiala Jail, as her release was mandatory following the issuance of the release order. After formally arresting Bushra Bibi again, the NAB team departed from Adiala Jail.

These developments followed the acceptance of appeals by former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the Iddat case by the Islamabad district and sessions court.

Earlier this year, the couple had been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rs500,000 each after a trial court found their nikah to be fraudulent.

The court’s decision removes the final legal obstacle keeping the ousted prime minister incarcerated. His sentences in the two Toshakhana cases were suspended, and he was acquitted in the cipher case by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were married in February 2018 in Lahore, in a ceremony attended by close relatives and friends, excluding the PTI founder’s sisters. Mufti Saeed officiated the nikah, with former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former SAPM Zulfi Bukhari serving as witnesses.

Last year, Bushra Bibi’s former husband, Khawar Maneka, who approached the court, claimed their marriage was illegal and violated Sharia law. He also accused them of fornication.
