Government Clarifies Dnata’s Position in PIA Privatization Process

ISLAMABAD, November 1 2024: In response to growing speculation and misinformation circulating on social media regarding the participation of Dnata (Emirates) in the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the Government of Pakistan’s Ministry of Privatisation has issued a clarification today.

The statement addresses claims suggesting that Dnata was barred from qualifying for the privatization process. Contrary to these assertions, the Ministry confirms that Dnata did not express interest in the privatization of PIA. Instead, Gerry’s International submitted an application as a single entity in response to the Expression of Interest published by the Privatisation Commission.

The Ministry’s statement elaborates that Gerry’s International included a list of its subsidiaries to demonstrate compliance with the pre-qualification criteria, which required annual revenues of PKR 200 billion. Among these subsidiaries, Gerry’s Dnata was noted as one of the ten listed. However, upon evaluation, it was determined that the collective annual revenues of all ten subsidiaries did not meet the requisite threshold, leading to Gerry’s International’s disqualification from the process.

This clarification aims to address misconceptions and provide transparency regarding the privatization efforts of PIA, which have been under scrutiny as part of the government’s broader economic reforms. The Ministry emphasizes its commitment to a fair and transparent privatization process and urges stakeholders and the public to rely on official channels for accurate information.

As the situation develops, the government remains focused on ensuring that the privatization of PIA proceeds in a manner that fosters competition and improves service delivery within Pakistan’s aviation sector.
