SINDH, November 03 2024: Tharparkar is experiencing a transformative journey that distinguishes it from other regions of Sindh, marked by notable progress in human development and economic prosperity aimed at uplifting the area.
The lives of Thar’s residents are witnessing improvement as investments in Thar Coal projects have generated thousands of job opportunities. This has catalyzed a range of social development initiatives that enhance the employability of the local community.
One of the standout initiatives is Khushal Thar, launched by Block II entities, which prioritizes local job creation. This initiative has successfully facilitated employment for over 35,000 individuals across various projects in Block II, with around 80% of positions filled by residents of Sindh. Furthermore, more than 3,000 youth from Thar have received training in diverse technical skills, including 250 individuals specifically trained in mechanical and electrical fields.
The expansion of skill development programs is also noteworthy. Training is now being offered in multiple areas, including technical education in welding, solarization, IT, stitching, and dressmaking.
A key player in this transformation is the Government Polytechnic Institute (GPI) in Mithi, which, in collaboration with the Thar Foundation—the CSR arm of Block II entities—provides a Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) in various disciplines such as mining, electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering. The institute has enrolled over 600 students in its DAE Mining program, 40 students in tailoring and 20 in IT, reflecting significant advancements in vocational education and training.
Equipped with advanced labs and infrastructure, students gain practical experience through solarization, PV technician training, and vocational welding programs. Additionally, courses in hospitality, including housekeeping and cooking, are being offered to further enrich the community’s skill set.
The Thar Foundation is equally committed to empowering local entrepreneurs and vulnerable populations through the distribution of livelihood grants. Approximately 130 grants have been allocated to beneficiaries, including small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and low-income families who have invested in tuck shops and livestock to improve their livelihoods.
These coordinated efforts have sparked significant transformation in Tharparkar, leading to measurable advancements in vocational skill training, employment opportunities, and overall community development. By empowering the local population, these initiatives not only enhance individual livelihoods but also contribute to the broader economic and social progress of the region.
