KARACHI, November 21 2024: Swedish Ambassador to Pakistan, Ms. Alexandra Berg von Linde, highlighted the difficulties faced by Swedish businesses operating in Pakistan, pointing to high tax rates, soaring energy prices, and challenges in transferring foreign currencies. Despite these obstacles, over 40 Swedish companies, including iconic brands, have been established in Pakistan and have played a crucial role in supporting the country’s economic growth.

Speaking at a meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Ambassador von Linde emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to foster a more favorable environment for foreign investment in Pakistan. While Swedish companies are well-acquainted with Pakistan’s business complexities, she stressed that resolving these challenges is key to unlocking further investment potential.

The meeting also saw discussions on Sweden’s interest in collaborating with Pakistan in areas such as sustainability, digitalization, and green transitions, which could benefit both nations. “These areas present a win-win opportunity for both countries,” she said, highlighting the importance of Pakistan’s green transition for remaining competitive in the European market.

Ambassador von Linde also expressed support for Pakistan’s efforts to stay aligned with the GSP+ regulations, which offer economic growth and sustainable development opportunities through the European Union. As Pakistan and Sweden celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the ambassador praised the growing collaboration between the two countries, particularly in trade, education, and innovation.

KCCI Senior Vice President Zia ul Arfeen also underscored the potential for expanding bilateral trade between the two nations, emphasizing sectors such as textiles, agriculture, renewable energy, and IT. He highlighted Sweden’s support through the GSP+ framework and called for enhanced people-to-people connections and exchange of trade delegations to boost economic cooperation.

Ambassador von Linde concluded by stressing the growing role of Pakistani students in Sweden, noting that they serve as vital ambassadors for future business and innovation ties between the two nations.
