KARACHI, December 23 2024: Two years ago, the world seemed to crumble for Kawish’s parents. At only two months old, their baby boy was diagnosed with life-threatening holes in his heart. Despite the bleak diagnosis, the doctors at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) assured them that surgery could save his life—but the cost was an overwhelming barrier for the family.
That’s when the “Mending Kids’ Hearts” program at AKUH came to their rescue. Thanks to the kindness of donors, the program covered the surgery’s expenses, and Kawish received the life-saving treatment he desperately needed. Today, at two years old, he is thriving—laughing, playing, and living the carefree life every child deserves—all thanks to AKUH’s medical team and the generosity of its supporters.
On December 22, over 100 corporate players came together at the AKUH Annual Golf Tournament, a key fundraising event for the “Mending Kids’ Hearts” program. This initiative provides critical surgeries to children suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), a condition that affects thousands of children across Pakistan. Since its launch in 2015, the program has saved more than 3,000 young lives.
CHD is the most common congenital defect in Pakistan, impacting over 60,000 newborns annually and contributing to the country’s high under-five mortality rate. However, with prompt medical intervention, 90% of these cases can be treated, giving children the opportunity for a healthy, vibrant future.
AKUH is one of the few hospitals in Pakistan offering neonatal cardiac surgeries, providing cutting-edge treatments for even the most complicated conditions. From arterial switches to neonatal arch surgeries, the hospital’s expertise ensures that even the most delicate procedures are performed with precision.
“There is no greater reward than witnessing a child take their first steps toward a healthy future—a future that might not have been possible without the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our team,” said Dr. Farhat Abbas, CEO of AKUH. “Events like the Annual Golf Tournament remind us of the incredible things we can accomplish when we unite for a cause greater than ourselves.”
This annual tournament has become a cornerstone event, showcasing the power of collaboration between the private and public sectors. Each swing of the club this Sunday helped bring us closer to healing young hearts across Pakistan.
The Siddique Sons team took home the coveted trophy as champions of the tournament, demonstrating impressive teamwork and skill throughout the event. ARY’s team finished as runners-up after a series of thrilling rounds.
The competition also celebrated individual talent, with Abdul Raffay winning the “Longest Drive” award for his remarkable 322-yard drive. The tournament was a memorable display of sportsmanship and camaraderie among all the participants.
“Thank you to everyone who supported this event today. Your participation in the tournament is about so much more than just playing golf—it’s about giving a chance at life to children who need our help,” said Zahra Somani, Chief Advancement Officer at Aga Khan University.
Through the AKUH Annual Golf Tournament, participants are helping to provide hope for children with congenital heart disease, ensuring that their futures are bright and full of promise. One swing at a time, these golfers are changing lives, supporting the future of Pakistan’s children, and continuing the hospital’s mission to heal young hearts.
