Crackdown on power theft yields recovery of Rs34 billion from offenders

Pakistan, November 13, 2023 : In an effort to combat power theft, the Power Division has successfully retrieved Rs 34 billion from individuals apprehended in the nationwide crackdown.

In September, the government and military leadership jointly decided to launch a nationwide crackdown on power theft. According to Power Division reports, 197 government employees affiliated with relevant institutions were suspended, and a minimum of 25,142 individuals were apprehended as part of the countrywide power theft crackdown.

A sum of Rs 34 billion was recouped during the crackdown, resulting in a reduction of Power Division losses by over Rs 12 billion. Meanwhile, the estimated annual loss in the national grid for the current year is Rs 589 billion, with Rs 199 billion attributed to various regions including ex-Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FTA), Balochistan, Tubewells, and Azad Kashmir. In the course of the electricity theft crackdown, Rs 46 billion was successfully recovered from perpetrators.

The relevant institutions have affirmed that nobody will be exempt from scrutiny, and legal action has been initiated against all individuals implicated in unlawful activities.
