Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade shooting

Police reported that at least one person was killed and 22 others were injured during a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday.

The deceased individual was identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a local radio disc jockey (DJ), according to a post shared by her employer, KKFI radio 90.1 FM. She passed away while undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds, as reported by Daily News.

“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of ‘Taste of Tejano’ lost her life,” the station shared on Facebook.

During a press briefing, Police Chief Stacey Graves announced that three individuals had been detained “and were under investigation” regarding the shooting near Kansas City’s iconic Union Station, which occurred following a parade filled with confetti. Reuters reported this development.

Graves explained that investigators had yet to determine a motive for the gun violence. Notably, among the injured were eleven children aged six to fifteen, who were caught in the crossfire or ensuing chaos.

A spokesperson from Children’s Mercy Kansas City hospital verified that nine out of twelve patients were victims of gunshot wounds.

Fire Department Chief Ross Grundyson disclosed during a late-afternoon news conference that at least 22 individuals had been struck by gunfire, with fifteen suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Hours after the shooting, the exact circumstances remained unclear, and authorities were still in the process of determining the full extent of casualties and the age range of the victims.

Graves said she was aware of reports that some fans may have participated in the pursuit and capture of at least one of the suspects, and investigators were reviewing video of the incident.

Approximately 1 million people gathered in downtown Kansas City for the parade and rally celebrating the Chiefs’ repeat championship win.

The shooting occurred while players were still on stage at the victory rally.

This tragic incident marked at least the 48th mass shooting in the United States this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.
