ISLAMABAD, July 4 ,2026: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said Pakistan is accelerating port modernisation, promoting the blue economy and advancing environmental sustainability under a broad reform agenda for the maritime sector.
During a meeting with Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in Istanbul, the minister outlined the government’s efforts to attract maritime investment, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen international cooperation.
Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in ship recycling, maritime governance, the blue economy and environmental protection.
Junaid Chaudhry also highlighted Pakistan’s initiatives to protect coastal ecosystems through large-scale mangrove plantations and other sustainable projects.
Meanwhile, Dominguez praised Pakistan’s progress on maritime reforms. He welcomed the country’s efforts to improve ship recycling, strengthen maritime governance and unlock the potential of the blue economy.
He also expressed interest in visiting Pakistan to deepen cooperation and review ongoing maritime initiatives.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to closer collaboration. They agreed to work together to build a safer, more sustainable and globally competitive maritime sector while expanding opportunities in the blue economy.
