KSE-100 Falls 993 Points as Oil Shock Triggers Profit-Taking

KARACHI, September 9, 2026: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) came under pressure on Tuesday as ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran and elevated international oil prices weakened investor sentiment.

Concerns over rising inflation, pressure on the external account and a higher import bill prompted investors to book profits after recent market gains. Selling remained strong in index-heavy sectors, keeping the broader market under pressure.

The KSE-100 Index fell as much as 2,145 points during intraday trading before recovering some of its losses. The benchmark index eventually closed at 172,642 points, down 993 points or 0.57%.

Major index-heavy stocks remained under selling pressure. UBL, LUCK, MEBL, NBP and PPL were among the biggest contributors to the decline. Together, these stocks dragged the KSE-100 Index down by around 485 points.

However, some stocks provided support and limited the market’s losses. PSEL, MCB and ATRL collectively contributed around 199 points to the index.

Trading activity remained strong despite the market decline. Total trading volume reached approximately 722 million shares, while the traded value stood at around Rs27.9 billion.

CNERGY emerged as the volume leader, with around 103 million shares changing hands during the session.

Market sentiment remained cautious as investors assessed the potential economic impact of prolonged geopolitical tensions and higher oil prices. Rising energy costs could increase inflationary pressure and widen Pakistan’s import bill, particularly if international oil prices remain elevated.

The session reflected renewed profit-taking after the recent gains in the stock market. Investors are likely to remain focused on developments in global oil prices, geopolitical tensions and their potential impact on Pakistan’s economy and corporate earnings.
