KARACHI: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU), Larkana, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Basic Life Support (BLS) training centre in Larkana.
The new centre aims to strengthen emergency medical response and increase the number of healthcare professionals trained in lifesaving skills across Larkana and upper Sindh.
The MoU was signed at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat of DUHS. DUHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazli Hussain and SMBBMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nusrat Shah led the delegations during the signing ceremony.
The DUHS delegation also included Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sajida Qureshi, Registrar Dr. Ashar Afaq, Director PDC Dr. Syed Farjad Sultan and members of the training centre team.
SMBBMU was represented by Director DHPE Dr. Saira Fatima and Training Location Coordinator Dr. Muhammad Imran Soomro.
BLS training covers essential emergency skills. These include chest compressions, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), rescue breathing and maintaining an open airway.
These skills enable trained healthcare workers to provide immediate assistance during life-threatening emergencies.
The new facility will particularly benefit doctors, nurses, paramedics, medical students and other healthcare professionals in Larkana and surrounding areas.
Currently, many professionals have to travel to distant locations to access standardised and certified lifesaving training. The new centre will provide access to such training closer to their workplaces and communities.
The initiative is also expected to improve emergency response capacity across upper Sindh. More trained healthcare workers could help ensure faster medical assistance during cardiac arrest, respiratory emergencies and other critical situations.
DUHS has been providing internationally certified healthcare training since 2010. According to the university, more than 25,000 healthcare professionals have received lifesaving skills training through its programmes.
The university has also expanded its training network by establishing centres and training locations in different parts of Pakistan.
Under the new partnership, DUHS and SMBBMU will work to expand access to modern and standardised BLS training in Sindh.
The programme will focus on developing healthcare professionals with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed to respond quickly during medical emergencies.
The initiative is expected to benefit patients and the wider public as well. Trained healthcare staff can provide timely assistance while emergency treatment is being arranged.
Both institutions expressed their commitment to expanding access to quality medical education, professional development and lifesaving skills.
The Larkana training centre could also provide a foundation for expanding certified healthcare training to other parts of Sindh in the future.
The initiative forms part of DUHS’s broader effort to make internationally standardised medical training more accessible across Pakistan.
By expanding BLS training in underserved areas, the partnership aims to build a better-trained and more emergency-ready healthcare workforce and improve the chances of saving lives during critical situations.
