KARACHI:July 29,2026: Google has introduced Selfie Video Sign-In, a new account verification feature that gives users another secure way to access their accounts while helping protect against deepfakes, impersonation, and unauthorized access.
The new feature offers an additional recovery option for users who are locked out of their accounts or cannot access their primary phone or computer. It expands Google’s existing sign-in methods, including passkeys and recovery contacts.
To enable the feature, users record a short selfie video by following a series of guided head movements. If they later need to recover their account, they simply record another selfie video. Google then compares the new recording with the original to verify the user’s identity before restoring account access.
Google said it designed the feature with privacy and security as top priorities. The company stores selfie videos only with the user’s consent, encrypts them while stored, and allows users to delete them at any time through their Google Account settings.
The company added that selfie videos are used solely for account verification unless users choose to share them for other purposes.
To prevent fraud, Google applies multiple security checks during the verification process. These include matching the new video with the stored selfie, requiring live head movements to confirm the user is physically present, and using additional security systems to detect suspicious sign-in attempts and defend against fake photos and AI-generated deepfake videos.
Google said the new feature builds on its ongoing efforts to make account recovery both more secure and more convenient as cyber threats continue to evolve.
