Police officers seek transfer after roadside fines ends in Karachi: DIG Shah

DIG Pir Muhammad Shah of Karachi Traffic Police has disclosed that traffic police personnel have begun asking for transfers since the introduction of an electronic challan system.

DIG Traffic noted that, following the implementation of electronic challans and the withdrawal of on-site challan powers from traffic police personnel, those who avoid performing their duty during duty hours have sought transfers out of traffic police to district police forces.

DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah told ARY News: “Those unwilling to work are typically interested in transfers; we do not intend to prevent them from receiving transfers.”

The DIG Traffic also noted that 800 traffic police officers who previously issued manual challans have now been given regulation duties instead.

Pir Muhammad Shah said traffic police officers were previously vulnerable to sudden attacks (referred to confrontations) when issuing challans, and citizens became weary of them; furthermore, officers weren’t adequately trained for this role.

He made clear his intention that only officers who operate with integrity will remain with the traffic force.

He noted their goal was to establish an institution beloved by their constituents. Regarding initiatives for traffic police officers, such as pick and drop services, lunch/dinner provisions and financial rewards for their duties he explained that these measures may all be on the table.

He noted that youth are being recruited into the traffic force to inject new blood and bring about change, concluding with e-challan cameras being installed for surveillance of traffic police personnel.

Earleir to this, Javed Alam Odho, Additional Inspector General of Police Karachi, presided over a pivotal meeting at the Karachi Police Office to review security arrangements for Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC) 2025.

According to a police spokesperson, senior officers including DIG Administration, DIGP Special Branch, DIGP Traffic, Commandant SSU, DIGPs West, South and East as well as district SSPs, SSP Security & Technical, SSP FSC as well as other officials attended this session.
