KARACHI, July 30, 2026: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab endorsed the proposal to establish a S.I.T.E. Development and Management Company (DMC) and indicated that additional government funding could be sought once ongoing infrastructure projects in the industrial area are completed on schedule.
The mayor made the remarks during a meeting with members of the S.I.T.E. Association of Industry (SAI). Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi also attended the meeting.
During the session, the association briefed the mayor on the progress of its three-phase grant-in-aid infrastructure project.
Wahab urged the association to accelerate work and complete the projects on time. He said timely completion would strengthen the case for securing additional development funds for the S.I.T.E. industrial area.
Responding to the association’s proposal to establish a S.I.T.E. DMC, similar to those operating in Korangi, Landhi, North Karachi and Federal B Area, the mayor called for consultations among all stakeholders to build consensus.
Meanwhile, Wahab announced that the 35-million-gallons-per-day (MGD) secondary treated water project at TP-1 is ready for industrial use. He said trial operations will begin within 10 days, with water quality at 1,800 TDS.
He added that a 1-MGD tertiary treatment pilot project will become operational by the end of August. The facility will reduce TDS levels to around 500, making the recycled water suitable for industrial processing.
According to the mayor, the recycled water project will help industries comply with environmental regulations while addressing the long-standing shortage of industrial water. He said authorities still need to finalize the pricing and distribution mechanism.
Wahab also said the city plans to supply 100 MGD of treated water to industries by the end of the year after further treatment.
Addressing another issue, he said water is available at Hub Dam and noted that the proposal to lay a dedicated water pipeline from the dam to the S.I.T.E. industrial area requires further discussions to remove existing bottlenecks.
The mayor also proposed holding monthly coordination meetings with the S.I.T.E. Association to address industrial issues on a regular basis.
Earlier, SAI President Abdul Rehman Fudda highlighted several concerns, including the formation of the S.I.T.E. DMC, encroachments, infrastructure maintenance, removal of debris, and the collection of municipal taxes by town authorities despite jurisdictional disputes. He also requested additional staff for the S.I.T.E. fire station.
SAI Patron-in-Chief Zubair Motiwala reiterated the need for a dedicated development company to manage the industrial area’s infrastructure. He also called for the construction of a Karachi bypass to reduce heavy traffic on S.I.T.E. roads and proposed utilizing Infrastructure Development Cess (IDC) funds for the project.
Patron Saleem Parekh thanked the Sindh government for releasing grant-in-aid funds and urged authorities to allocate dedicated funding for the long-term maintenance of roads and infrastructure.
Following the meeting, Wahab and Commissioner Naqvi inaugurated infrastructure rehabilitation work in the S.I.T.E. industrial area by unveiling the foundation stone at the Siemens Roundabout.
