KARACHI, October 5, 2026: Federal Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC), Awais Manzur Sumra, visited Dawlance’s DPL1 manufacturing facility in Karachi to review the company’s transition to climate-friendly refrigerant and insulation technologies.
The visit took place on September 24, 2026, as Pakistan continues efforts to protect the ozone layer and reduce climate-warming emissions under its commitments to the Montreal Protocol.
The delegation included Dr. Zaigham Abbas, Deputy Director (Labs/NEQs), Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA); Syed Azmat Hussain Shah, Interim National Project Manager, National Ozone Unit (NOU), MoCC; and Muhammad Zia Ul Mustafa, Deputy Director (Admin), Pak-EPA, Islamabad.
A key focus of the visit was Dawlance’s conversion to cyclopentane technology. The project was implemented with financial and technical assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the National Ozone Unit.
Cyclopentane is used in the insulation foam of refrigerators and freezers. It has zero ozone-depleting potential and a negligible global warming potential compared with the chemicals it replaces.
The delegation reviewed the technology and its environmental benefits, highlighting the role of cooperation between the government, international development partners and the private sector in supporting sustainable industrial production.
Dawlance Chief Executive Officer Umar Ahsan Khan said the company views sustainability as a responsibility towards consumers and future generations. He said the shift to cyclopentane demonstrates what Pakistani industry can achieve through collaboration between the government, international partners and businesses.
During a detailed briefing, the delegation was also informed about the environmental and climate impacts of refrigerant use and the measures Dawlance has introduced across its manufacturing operations.
The briefing covered the company’s efforts to support Pakistan’s phase-down of ozone-depleting and high-global-warming-potential substances. It also highlighted Dawlance’s wider sustainability initiatives, including emissions reduction, energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Dawlance reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s climate and environmental goals through responsible refrigerant transition and sustainable manufacturing practices.
