Chongqing (Xinhua): Ahead of the vibrant celebrations of the Chinese New Year, a lively international fair was held in Chongqing, where Pakistani cuisine emerged as one of the main attractions.
Alongside local festive goods, food and specialty products from various countries were showcased, giving the event a distinct international character.
A Pakistani food stall quickly became a crowd favorite. Kaleem Akram warmly invited visitors to try traditional pakoras, saying, âPlease try these delicious snacks â children love them. They are a traditional Pakistani treat.â
After tasting the food, a local woman purchased several items and eagerly learned more about Pakistani culture. Many visitors also expressed interest in Akramâs restaurant chain, Zaiqa, which operates in China.
Having lived in China for several years, Akram currently runs restaurants in Changchun and Chongqing. He noted that Chinaâs vast market and inclusive social environment provide excellent opportunities for foreign entrepreneurs.
The fair also featured cuisines from Italy, Vietnam, and other countries. Italian trader Franco praised Pakistani biscuits and sweets, highlighting the unique and aromatic use of spices. As a pastry chef, he found the flavors particularly distinctive and inspiring.
In addition to international food, traditional Chinese folk games were presented, including âTouhu,â which a Belarusian tourist described as similar to Western darts but more festive and relaxed.
Pakistanâs Deputy Consul General in Chengdu, Chaudhry Talha, also attended the event and introduced Pakistani spices that resemble those used in Sichuan and Chongqing cuisine. He emphasized that cultural exchanges through food serve as strong bridges between people.
He expressed optimism about future economic and cultural cooperation between Pakistan and Chongqing, reaffirming that Pakistan-China friendship remains higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the oceans.
