KARACHI, July 6,2026:Next, Dr. S. Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director of IBA Karachi, highlighted the institution’s role in promoting informed debate on national economic issues. He also encouraged students to actively participate in public policy discussions.
Ammar Habib, Assistant Professor of Practice at the School of Business Studies (SBS), moderated the session.
The panel featured Khurram Schehzad, Adviser to the Finance Minister; Dr. Ali Salman, CEO of the Policy Research Institute of Market Economy (PRIME); Dr. Ali Hasanain, Associate Professor of Economics at LUMS; Dr. Zehra Farooq, Staff Officer to the Member (IR Operations) at the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR); and Dr. Aadil Nakhoda, Assistant Professor at the School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS), IBA.
During the discussion, Khurram Schehzad outlined the government’s strategy for maintaining fiscal stability, attracting investment, supporting industry and sustaining economic growth.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ali Salman explained how tariff reforms could strengthen export-oriented industries and improve Pakistan’s competitiveness.
Dr. Ali Hasanain called for stronger institutions and better coordination between trade and industrial policies. He also stressed the need to remove Pakistan’s anti-export bias.
In addition, Dr. Zehra Farooq discussed tax reforms, revenue mobilization, enforcement measures and the FBR’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives.
Finally, Dr. Aadil Nakhoda highlighted the benefits of a simplified tariff structure, stronger export competitiveness and deeper integration into global value chains.
The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, reaffirming IBA Karachi’s commitment to promoting evidence-based policy dialogue and informed decision-making on key national economic issues.
