Pakistan Posts $459mn Current Account Surplus in May, External Sector Strengthens Further

ISLAMABAD, June 17 ,2026: Pakistan recorded a $459 million current account surplus in May 2026, according to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday. This marks a sharp reversal from the $276 million deficit in April, as the external sector showed continued improvement.

Moreover, the cumulative current account balance for the first eleven months of FY26 (11MFY26) returned to positive territory. It reached a $255 million surplus, compared with a deficit in the same period last year.

In addition, the May surplus also showed strong year-on-year improvement. In May 2025, Pakistan had posted a $44 million deficit.

Furthermore, this is the fourth surplus in the last five months, signaling a steady recovery in Pakistan’s external position. Strong inflows and improved macroeconomic management supported this trend.

As a result, the stronger current account is expected to support foreign exchange reserves. It will also boost investor confidence and stabilize the balance of payments.

Overall, the SBP data confirms continued external sector improvement. Meanwhile, policymakers aim to maintain macroeconomic stability while supporting economic recovery and long-term growth.
