Karachi NIPA Incident: Grandfather withdraws claim about KMC involvement in Ibrahim’s recovery

The grandfather of three-year-old Ibrahim has dismissed media reports suggesting he confirmed that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) recovered the child’s body after the NIPA Chowrangi manhole incident.

Speaking with journalists, Mahmudul Hassan clarified that he had never issued any official statement and expressed concern that several remarks being circulated were incorrectly attributed to him without proper verification.

He also rejected claims that he accepted any payment related to the child’s recovery, stressing that he was an elderly man who could not be influenced and would never compromise on matters concerning his grandson.

Hassan recounted that the family searched through the night following the tragedy, with many locals witnessing their distress as they desperately waited for news of the missing child.

He said that some people initially informed him that a young garbage-picker had found the body, and the family believed it at first. However, he later wanted to meet the boy himself to understand the situation more clearly.

According to Hassan, he later learned that the boy had been taken into police custody. He added that the family did not know which department was responsible for the recovery, but witnesses told them that a fifteen-year-old named Tanveer had taken Ibrahim out.

The tragedy has raised serious concerns about civic negligence. Hassan said that when government institutions fail to fulfill their duties, citizens also share responsibility for ensuring public safety.

He urged residents to cover open manholes themselves if authorities do not act, emphasizing that such steps could prevent future accidents and protect children throughout Karachi.

Hassan also blamed a nearby private store, saying the management should have placed a proper cover on the manhole rather than leaving the area unsafe.

He added that the SP Investigation Central visited the family to gather information, but no other government official had contacted them regarding the incident so far.
