Dow University Hospital Becomes Sindh’s First Public Sector Hospital to Receive Regular SHCC License

KARACHI July 6,2026: Dow University Hospital has become Sindh’s first public sector general hospital to secure a Regular License from the Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) after meeting all required standards for quality, patient safety and regulatory compliance.

SHCC awarded the license during a ceremony at the Abdul Qadeer Khan Auditorium, Dow International Medical College, Ojha Campus. SHCC CEO Dr. Ahsan Qavi, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazli Hossain, Pro Vice Chancellors, faculty members and SHCC officials attended the event.

During the ceremony, Dr. Ahsan Qavi presented the Regular License to Prof. Jehan Ara Hassan.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Qavi said the license marks the beginning of a greater responsibility. He urged hospitals to continuously improve healthcare quality, patient safety and service standards.

He added that quality depends on strong leadership, consistent effort and institutional commitment. Referring to recent reports of HIV transmission allegedly linked to the reuse of syringes at a Karachi hospital, he stressed that ethical medical practice requires integrity and professional accountability.

Moreover, Dr. Qavi urged healthcare institutions to strengthen patient communication, improve documentation and ensure informed consent. He noted that poor communication, rather than medical negligence, often leads to patient complaints.

He also expressed hope that this achievement would encourage other public hospitals in Sindh to pursue higher quality standards.

Meanwhile, Prof. Nazli Hossain said hospitals should regularly conduct audits, review policies and strengthen grievance redressal systems to maintain quality.

She added that healthcare institutions should treat patient complaints as opportunities to improve services.

Furthermore, she said DUHS has incorporated patient communication, informed consent, medical documentation, artificial intelligence and interprofessional care into its curriculum to prepare future healthcare professionals.

She also praised Prof. Jehan Ara Hassan, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative staff for achieving the milestone through teamwork.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Jehan Ara Hassan said the hospital launched its quality improvement journey to build a comprehensive quality management system despite already having modern facilities and infrastructure.

She said every department played a role in upgrading the hospital from a provisional license to a regular license through continuous improvement, regular audits, quality assurance and standardized operating procedures.

She added that the hospital has maintained complete medical records for the past five years and remains committed to providing safe, high-quality and patient-centered healthcare.

Finally, Dr. Ahsan Qavi, Prof. Nazli Hossain, Prof. Jehan Ara Hassan and Prof. Sajida Qureshi presented Shields of Excellence to various hospital departments in recognition of their outstanding performance.
