KARACHI: Aug 10,2026: The Naya Nazimabad Independence Day Sports Festival has kicked off with a colourful opening ceremony to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.
The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. Twelve-year-old student Ayat then performed a patriotic song and received appreciation from the audience.
The organizers also hoisted the national flag, released pigeons and cut a cake to formally open the festival.
Naya Nazimabad Gymkhana President and chief guest Syed Muhammad Talha said the organizers arranged the festival to celebrate Independence Day with enthusiasm and promote sports among young people.
The festival features competitions in several sports, including cricket, football, snooker, squash, tennis, padel, table tennis, swimming, badminton, skating and archery. The competitions will continue until August 14.
Meanwhile, organizers will hold a musical concert and fireworks display on the night of August 13.
Talha said Pakistan has achieved major successes in difficult circumstances. Now, he added, he wants Pakistani athletes to achieve similar success in international sports.
He also highlighted Naya Nazimabad’s development as a sports-focused community. According to him, the project reflects Chairman Arif Habib’s vision of creating a “Sports City” with facilities for more than 20 sports.
Talha said Pakistan’s youth have immense talent and only need proper support and opportunities. He added that despite limited resources, Pakistani athletes have achieved impressive results at international events.
He further stressed that expanding sports facilities could encourage more young people to participate in sports. He also expressed hope that Pakistani athletes would deliver strong performances at future Olympic Games.
Ghani Usman, Tariq Iqbal and other speakers also addressed the ceremony.
A large number of citizens attended the event. Senior Manager Raheel Karim, Sports Manager Muhammad Asif and Sindh Tennis Association Secretary Khalid Rahmani were also present.
The organizers distributed certificates among children who completed the summer camp. They also presented appreciation awards to Sajid Irfan, Muhammad Amir, Afra Siddiqui, Syeda Sidra, Safdar Ahmed, Ibrahim Shaikh, Abdul Shakoor and others.
