Karachi, August 4, 2025: A delegation from the Senate Standing Committee on Railways, led by Senator Jam Saifullah Khan, visited the Divisional Superintendent (DS) Office of Pakistan Railways in Karachi on Monday to assess operational and financial challenges faced by the department.
During the visit, railway officials presented a detailed briefing on persistent issues including aging infrastructure, limited resources, and severe financial constraints most notably, the growing burden of pension liabilities that continue to strain the department’s annual budget.
Officials highlighted that pension payments have become a major impediment to improving service delivery and expanding operations. The committee acknowledged the urgency of the issue and assured that it would take up the matter with the Ministry of Finance to explore structural reforms and long-term solutions.
Security concerns were also brought into focus, particularly regarding the Karachi-Hyderabad corridor, a critical stretch in the national rail network. Authorities detailed ongoing efforts to enhance surveillance, bolster cooperation with law enforcement agencies, and upgrade security infrastructure.
In addition, the committee was briefed on modernization initiatives aimed at revitalizing Pakistan Railways, including the procurement of new coaches, improvement of signaling systems, and station upgrades.
Senator Saifullah and other committee members commended the local railway administration for its efforts and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting reforms that would ensure the financial and operational sustainability of the organization.
The visit marks a continued effort by the Senate to engage directly with on-ground challenges and support institutional improvements in Pakistan Railways.
