Sindh Govt to Launch Rohri–Sukkur Train; Karachi–Sukkur Suburban Rail Also Proposed

August 6, 2025 – Karachi: The Sindh government has announced its decision to launch a train service on the short route between Rohri and Sukkur, aimed at easing travel for thousands of daily commuters. The initiative, part of broader transport development plans, was shared by Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning and Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah during a meeting with a high-level Pakistan Railways delegation.

The minister revealed that a proposal to introduce suburban railway services between Karachi and Sukkur is under active consideration. Inspired by the successful Lahore model, this joint venture between the Government of Sindh and Pakistan Railways could benefit millions of people, reduce congestion on inter-city bus routes, and improve overall public transport infrastructure across the province.

The meeting was held at the Energy Department’s office and was attended by Chairman/Secretary Pakistan Railways Syed Mazhar-ul-Islam, Chief Operating Officer Railways Amir Ali Baloch, Divisional Superintendent Railways Karachi Rehan Lakho, along with Sindh officials including Secretary Energy Mushtaq Ahmed Soomro, MD Thar Coal Energy Board Tariq Ali Shah, Additional Secretary Coal Dr. Waqas Rajput, and Chief Technical Officer Shariq Raza.

Chairman Railways Mazhar-ul-Islam highlighted Pakistan Railways’ partnership with the Punjab government, which has already successfully launched suburban rail services in Lahore, reaching over 80 million people. He called for Sindh Government’s active cooperation in replicating similar public-benefit projects.

Minister Nasir Hussain Shah reaffirmed Sindh’s commitment to public welfare, aligning with the vision of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He noted that the province is open to collaborating with institutions focused on development and has already completed its responsibilities regarding the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR). He expressed concern that the KCR’s progress was stalled by Pakistan Railways without clear justification.

The minister also stressed the Sindh government’s success in executing several Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects and declared the Karachi-to-Rohri rail line a priority. He assured full support for the ML-1 project, including expedited issuance of NOCs and technical assistance. He also addressed delays caused by railway administration’s inattention and proposed forming a joint coordination committee to resolve outstanding issues.

Additional discussions included suggestions to improve railway stations across Sindh, ensure safety at railway crossings, and maintain railway premises through cleanliness and green belt initiatives.
