MPA, lawyers’ vehicles seen violating number plate laws in Karachi, Public reacts

A growing public outcry has erupted after images and videos circulated online showing vehicles in Karachi displaying professional identity plates – such as those of Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) and legal professionals – in front of their official number plates, a clear violation of traffic regulations.

The visuals, shared by the community page Clifton Defence Community (CDC), show at least two vehicles: one carrying an MPA plate and another sporting an Advocate High Court emblem positioned over or in front of the legal registration number.

According to traffic laws, no emblem, sticker, or plate is allowed to obscure a vehicle’s government-issued number plate, regardless of the individual’s profession or status.

The posts prompted widespread frustration from citizens who say such actions highlight a long-standing culture of impunity enjoyed by “powerful people” across the city.

One social media user expressed anger, saying: “Video bana li, khush ho gaye… ab kuch nahi hone wala.” “You made the video and are satisfied… but nothing is going to happen.”

Another remarked that the issue is far from isolated, commenting: “I have noticed many vehicles like that in Karachi DHA.”

Several commenters also claimed that lawyers, government officials, and other influential groups often use such name plates as a form of intimidation or to avoid routine checks by law enforcement.

Despite repeated public complaints, many citizens believe enforcement remains selective.

The Karachi Traffic Police has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the recent images, though legal experts note that obstructing a number plate is a punishable offense under traffic regulations, regardless of the offender’s position.

For now, Karachi’s residents continue to voice their frustration, calling for equal implementation of the law and an end to the culture of unchecked privilege on the city’s roads.
