Gilgit, August 4, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to intensify relief and repair work in the rain-affected areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, especially in Diamir and surrounding districts, following recent heavy rains and cloudbursts.
During a high-level meeting held in Gilgit, the prime minister reviewed the destruction caused by the disaster, which resulted in loss of lives and severe damage to infrastructure. He offered prayers for those who lost their lives and wished the injured a fast recovery.
The prime minister stressed that although Pakistan contributes very little to global carbon emissions, it remains one of the countries most affected by climate change. He called for greater efforts to take part in global climate discussions and secure international support for disaster-resistant infrastructure.
Shehbaz Sharif said that climate change is clearly impacting areas like Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and other parts of the country. He directed the Ministry of Climate Change to play a more active role in tackling these challenges.
He also instructed the Ministry of Communications to speed up the repair of roads and infrastructure damaged by floods and rains.
In addition, the prime minister reviewed the progress of key development projects in the region. He said he would personally monitor the Solar Park project approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) and return soon to lay the foundation stone of the Daanish Schools.
