Gilgit, August 04, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the immediate completion of the advanced weather warning system in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to help prepare for future natural disasters.
Speaking at a cheque distribution ceremony for families affected by recent rains and floods, the prime minister said that Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by natural disasters, and strong systems are needed to reduce damage and loss of life.
He noted that while a weather warning system had been planned for GB years ago, no real progress was made in the past seven years, and even in the last year and a half, the work remained stalled. He made it clear that no further delay would be accepted.
During the event, the prime minister distributed compensation cheques to families who lost loved ones in the recent cloudbursts and flooding. He said that both the federal government and GB authorities would work closely to support and rehabilitate affected communities.
The prime minister also announced the following:
- Rs4 billion from the federal government for relief and rehabilitation
- A 100-megawatt solar power project, to be completed this year to provide electricity during the harsh winter season
- Plans to launch Daanish Schools in GB, where admissions will be based on merit
He emphasized that these schools are not just expenses, but investments in the future of Pakistan’s youth.
The event was attended by GB Governor, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, federal and provincial ministers, officials, and affected families.
Chief Minister Gulbar Khan spoke about the rescue and relief work carried out after the floods. Federal Minister Engineer Amir Muqam praised the prime minister’s commitment to public welfare, noting that GB’s annual budget has now increased to Rs186 billion.
