Bradley Cooper has spoken candidly about a difficult period early in his career, revealing that his time living in Los Angeles left him feeling isolated and unhappy despite professional opportunities.
Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the Oscar-nominated actor recalled struggling with depression in his mid-twenties while based in Los Angeles, describing the experience as “miserable.” Cooper said relocating to the city for acting work, including a role on the television series Alias, did not bring the fulfillment he had expected.

According to Cooper, the contrast between Los Angeles and New York City played a significant role in his emotional state. Having attended graduate school in New York, he described that chapter of his life as deeply rewarding and socially fulfilling. By comparison, he said Los Angeles felt isolating and disconnected.
Cooper explained that Los Angeles’ geography and lifestyle made it harder for him to feel part of a community. While New York’s walkable neighborhoods and shared public spaces encouraged social interaction, he felt that Los Angeles lacked the same sense of spontaneous connection.

He recalled spending much of his time either at work, at home, or alone in his car, which added to his sense of detachment. Despite seeing advertisements and billboards promoting events around the city, Cooper said he felt excluded from the cultural energy happening around him.
That isolation, he added, triggered feelings of insecurity and self-doubt reminiscent of his teenage years. Cooper said the emotional experience was confusing, especially as his career appeared to be progressing.
