Mike Tindall denies R360 Rugby Project is poaching NRL players

Mike Tindall has dismissed allegations that his proposed R360 rugby competition is attempting to lure players away from Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL), insisting the project is focused solely on rugby union.

Speaking at the Magic Millions horse racing event in Australia, the former England rugby captain addressed rumours suggesting the breakaway competition is targeting league stars. Tindall said the claims are inaccurate and stressed that R360 has not actively pursued NRL players.

“We didn’t target anyone,” Tindall said. “NRL players and their agents approached us. We didn’t go after them.”

Tindall explained that while many league players are elite athletes, only a small number would realistically be able to transition to rugby union. He noted that positions such as wingers and fullbacks — commonly referred to as the back three — are among the few roles where crossover is feasible.

He added that switching codes presents significant physical and tactical challenges, pointing to Sam Burgess’ move from South Sydney to England’s squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup as an example of how demanding such transitions can be.

The comments come amid concerns over player workload in the NRL, with the 2025 season involving 27 regular rounds, finals, State of Origin fixtures, and international commitments. Tindall suggested that the demanding schedule has prompted some athletes to explore alternative opportunities.

However, criticism of the R360 project has continued. ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys has accused the venture of attempting to entice contracted NRL players with financial incentives. The NRL has also warned that players who take part in unsanctioned competitions could face suspensions of up to 10 years if the league is not officially recognised.

Tindall played down the backlash, noting that the planned launch of R360 — originally expected in 2026 — has been delayed until 2028, allowing time for the competition to develop without conflict.
